Doomsday Preppers: Stockpiles, Ammunition, and Jesus | Should You Be Afraid?

The collapse of society is coming. It’s inevitable. That is at least if you’ve read all the headlines about climate change, war, insurrection, nuclear tensions, the dying oceans, falling sperm counts. It’s a lot to handle. Zeke Spector travels to the Ozarks to meet with a religious community of doomsday preppers to see what it takes not to be afraid of the world. Inside Storm Area 51: How a Viral Meme Almost Destroyed a Town

The Internet erupted in laughter and curiosity when Matty Roberts created his Storm Area 51 Facebook event. The event went on to become a viral meme. Harnessing the sensational momentum, the storming event was transformed into a music festival that was set to take place in the rural town of Rachel, Nevada. Power struggles behind the scenes, however, created chaos and confusion for both the media and those who wanted to attend. VICE producers Zeke Spector and Dan Zabludovsky documented their process of trying to gain access to the event and their attempt to make sense of how an Internet entity can affect people in the real world. Is Your Webcam Watching You? | Should You Be Afraid?

For VICE's Zeke Spector, putting a piece of tape over the webcam was just good practice; one never knows who may be looking in. But with the seemingly endless amount of digital meetings for work and family hangouts, Zeke had become somewhat complacent putting back on the tape after every use. So he was absolutely terrified when he received an email that claimed it had been recording him in a compromising situation and would release the video to all his contacts unless he paid a ransom in Bitcoin. Zeke began his adventure down another rabbit hole to see how feasible a webcam attack is and explore the underbelly of cybercrime that results in millions of dollars in losses a year. The Young Black Conservatives of Trump’s America

In October of 2018, hundreds of young conservatives of color met up in Washington, DC, for the first ever Young Black Leadership Summit: a four-day conference that featured speeches from conservative actress Stacey Dash and firebrand Candace Owens, a trip to the White House to hear Trump speak, and a rare chance for young, black Republicans to get together and network IRL. VICE’s Lee Adams went to the summit to talk firsthand with young, black conservatives about what drew them to the Republican party, along with what kind of backlash they’ve faced from the black community for going public with their political views. To find out more about the movement, he also tagged along with Antonia Okafor—an outspoken Second Amendment activist—on a hunting trip in northwestern Iowa with Steve King, a House Rep who’s been widely criticized for his racist comments. Lastly, he met up with Shekinah Geist, a black Republican and budding social media influencer, and sat in on a conversation between her and a group of peers from the local black student union who challenged her on her support for President Trump. Social Experiment: Military Escorts for VIP Subway Riders | Fake Focus Group

Public transit is a mess. Overcrowding, frequent delays, and crime are just some of the problems commuters face when riding the “chariot of the people.” In this episode of Fake Focus Group, our phony proctor Sameer presents a bogus privatized version of the subway to a group of real New Yorkers to see if they would go along with it. In exchange for a higher fare, riders would receive elite perks like VIP seating, armed private security, and in-transit entertainment from the likes of Yoko Ono. But are they willing to sacrifice their functioning, yet insufficient system for corporate interests? Let’s see if the prank lands. A Native American Tribe Is Using Traditional Culture To Fight Addiction

A year and half ago, Gabe Stewart stood in tribal court pleading guilty to felony charges because he stole money from his family to support his opioid addiction. In January, his community honored him for overcoming addiction and watched as his case was dismissed entirely. Stewart is a member of the Penobscot Nation in Maine, a state hit hard by the opioid crisis. American indigenous communities like his are also some of the hardest hit, with overdose deaths for rural American Indians and Alaska Natives rising by 519 percent between 1999 and 2015, more than double the increase nationally. When Stewart faced felony charges related to his addiction to Percocet, he was able to benefit from his tribe's unique approach to addiction. Recognizing that issues with substance abuse in native communities often arise from intergenerational trauma, the Penobscot Nation attempts to reacquaint criminal drug offenders with tribal traditions and cultural practices to help them make a full recovery. Tribal members who commit substance abuse-related crimes can enter a program called the Healing to Wellness Court, which operates something like a traditional drug court but offers a cultural curriculum. VICE News followed Stewart on his last day in the Healing to Wellness Court. Meet Big Man Tyrone, The President Of Kekistan (Not A Real Country)

Big Man Tyrone is the online persona of Gordon Hurd, a Cameroonian-born YouTuber living in the U.K., who runs a business that makes custom web video messages. Many of those messages are downright silly or inside jokes, but most of Hurd’s fans are denizens of the online forums like 4Chan and Reddit. Hurd has quickly become one of the unlikely faces of Kekistan, a fictional land adopted by the alt-right and white nationalists. This past June, Tyrone declared himself the president of Kekistan in a video he intended to be humorous. While Kekistanis claim to troll the identity politics of the left and right, the Southern Poverty Law Center has called the religion of Kekistan “the semi-ironic ‘religion’ the white nationalist movement has created for itself online.” Citizens of Kekistan, Kekistanis or Keks, have created a “history” that dates back thousands of years and a religion that portrays Pepe the Frog as a prophet. The ironic tone and alternative political narratives pushed by the group have been considered a gateway to the more extreme ideological groups of the alt-right. Though Hurd says he’s not an ideologue and doesn’t try to keep up with the trolls, he’s happy to take the money of Kekistan fans. In addition to all of the Kekistan-themed videos his fans request, Hurd sells half of his T-shirt inventory to Keks every month. We Make Porn to Pay Our Rent

Jessie and PJ Sage are a very busy married couple; they’re both academics, run a podcast together, and she writes a column for the local paper. To make ends meet so they can pursue all of their passions and raise a family, they make their own custom pornography together and sell it to clients or distribute it online. The porn clips they release help them advertise for other elements of their online sex work enterprise that can be more lucrative such as camming and phone sex operating. While the choice of their side hustle hasn’t always been easy for their friends and their extended family to understand, it has allowed them to have a more flexible lifestyle where they have the freedom to choose when they want to churn out sex-work related content. Taking Ketamine And Facing My Fear of Dying | Spiraling

It's a question as old as human consciousness: what happens after we die? While we may never have a full answer, there are plenty of first-hand accounts from individuals who have perhaps touched the boundaries between life and the great unknown via near death experiences (NDEs). In this episode of Spiraling, VICE producer Zeke Spector tries to conquer his own fear of death by attempting to recreate the conditions of an NDE in order to try and understand what death might teach us about life itself. Dennis Woodruff may be the most famous non-famous person you’ve never heard of. A fixture of Hollywood for decades, Woodruff has driven around in his eccentric cars, adorned with colorful images and his contact information with the intention of attracting studio executives who might help him land his big break. A trained actor, Woodruff started making his own movies based on a suggestion from Quentin Tarantino to market his abilities. With the help of his friend and collaborator, Keith Kurlander, they’ve produced dozens of movies and TV shows that have become internationally known as examples of guerilla filmmaking. Inside the Secret Clubs of the Rich | Spiraling

Conspiracy theories have run wild over the past few years. Many of these theories propose a common theme that a shadowy elite is in control and the chaos of living in the 2020's is all a part of the plan. It doesn't help that wealthy individuals often isolate themselves into exclusive communities of other rich people. VICE Producer Zeke Spector spirals down the rabbit hole to understand where these conspiracy theories come from and expose what the rich are allegedly hiding. 00:00 Intro 01:17 The Bohemian Club 06:24 Breaking into the Grove 08:02 The Keeper of Knowledge 09:57 Meeting the Rich Elites 15:40 Hold Up, I Want to be Rich 17:59 How Much?
