Inside Storm Area 51: How a Viral Meme Almost Destroyed a Town
The Internet erupted in laughter and curiosity when Matty Roberts created his Storm Area 51 Facebook event. The event went on to become a viral meme. Harnessing the sensational momentum, the storming event was transformed into a music festival that was set to take place in the rural town of Rachel, Nevada. Power struggles behind the scenes, however, created chaos and confusion for both the media and those who wanted to attend. VICE producers Zeke Spector and Dan Zabludovsky documented their process of trying to gain access to the event and their attempt to make sense of how an Internet entity can affect people in the real world. Is Your Webcam Watching You? | Should You Be Afraid?
For VICE's Zeke Spector, putting a piece of tape over the webcam was just good practice; one never knows who may be looking in. But with the seemingly endless amount of digital meetings for work and family hangouts, Zeke had become somewhat complacent putting back on the tape after every use. So he was absolutely terrified when he received an email that claimed it had been recording him in a compromising situation and would release the video to all his contacts unless he paid a ransom in Bitcoin. Zeke began his adventure down another rabbit hole to see how feasible a webcam attack is and explore the underbelly of cybercrime that results in millions of dollars in losses a year. On VICE’s weed travel show ‘BLUNT REVIEWS,’ we trek to places where weed is legal to review things a cannabis-consuming tourist can do while they’re stoned. On this episode, VICE's Trey Smith visited Alaska, where he stayed at Cecelia's B&B, a weed-friendly bed and breakfast in Anchorage, and sampled a THC-infused buffet with folks from the local weed industry. Then he stopped by The High Expedition in Talkeetna, a dispensary that doubles as a museum to famous mountain climber Ray Genet, sampling their product before taking a bush plane to check out the surrounding mountain scenery. I Adopted a Baby Werewolf for a Day
Since 2010, artist Asia Charity Eriksen has made more than 300 “WerePups,” impressively lifelike baby werewolves that she paints, details, and covers with fur by hand. They’ve developed a cult following as she’s sold them to owners—or as they call themselves, parents—who set them up with car seats, baby clothes, and more, treating the pups almost like their own kids. VICE’s Taji Ameen paid Eriksen a visit to hear why she started making WerePups and see the “lab” where she puts them together, all before adopting one for himself. Then he brought it back to New York City, where he strapped the thing into a baby carrier and took it on a trip to Times Square. Social Experiment: Military Escorts for VIP Subway Riders | Fake Focus Group
Public transit is a mess. Overcrowding, frequent delays, and crime are just some of the problems commuters face when riding the “chariot of the people.” In this episode of Fake Focus Group, our phony proctor Sameer presents a bogus privatized version of the subway to a group of real New Yorkers to see if they would go along with it. In exchange for a higher fare, riders would receive elite perks like VIP seating, armed private security, and in-transit entertainment from the likes of Yoko Ono. How to Hotbox A Tent With An Air Mattress Pump
Next time you’re looking to get extremely stoned on a camping trip or at a music festival, you might want to consider hotboxing your tent—a method that's as simple as it is innovative. Once you've inflated your air mattress, take the pump and rig it up to a plastic container using a few household tools and a bit of duct tape. Once your makeshift bowl is complete, load it up with weed and light it with a blowtorch. VICE's Trey Smith will show you how. The Young Black Conservatives of Trump’s America
In October of 2018, hundreds of young conservatives of color met up in Washington, DC, for the first ever Young Black Leadership Summit: a four-day conference that featured speeches from conservative actress Stacey Dash and firebrand Candace Owens, a trip to the White House to hear Trump speak, and a rare chance for young, black Republicans to get together and network IRL. VICE’s Lee Adams went to the summit to talk firsthand with young, black conservatives about what drew them to the Republican party, along with what kind of backlash they’ve faced from the black community for going public with their political views. To find out more about the movement, he also tagged along with Antonia Okafor—an outspoken Second Amendment activist—on a hunting trip in northwestern Iowa with Steve King, a House Rep who’s been widely criticized for his racist comments. Lastly, he met up with Shekinah Geist, a black Republican and budding social media influencer, and sat in on a conversation between her and a group of peers from the local black student union who challenged her on her support for President Trump. The Disturbing Reality of Bulletproof Backpacks
Bulletproof backpacks have broken into the mainstream in the last few months, with interest spiking after a rash of school shootings in America, and now major retailers like Office Depot carry them alongside your everyday JanSports. Advocates of the military-grade school supplies say they’re an essential line of defense for students—but some experts argue that they’re only stoking fear, fueling the hysteria around gun violence in a way that does more damage than they’re worth. VICE’s Lee Adams met up with the founder of a bulletproof backpack manufacturer in Massachusetts for an in-depth look at how they’re made, and how well they hold up in the line of fire. Then he sat down with a few high schoolers to hear what they think about them—and what it says about the state of our country. A Native American Tribe Is Using Traditional Culture To Fight Addiction
A year and half ago, Gabe Stewart stood in tribal court pleading guilty to felony charges because he stole money from his family to support his opioid addiction. In January, his community honored him for overcoming addiction and watched as his case was dismissed entirely. Stewart is a member of the Penobscot Nation in Maine, a state hit hard by the opioid crisis. American indigenous communities like his are also some of the hardest hit, with overdose deaths for rural American Indians and Alaska Natives rising by 519 percent between 1999 and 2015, more than double the increase nationally. When Stewart faced felony charges related to his addiction to Percocet, he was able to benefit from his tribe's unique approach to addiction. Recognizing that issues with substance abuse in native communities often arise from intergenerational trauma, the Penobscot Nation attempts to reacquaint criminal drug offenders with tribal traditions and cultural practices to help them make a full recovery. Tribal members who commit substance abuse-related crimes can enter a program called the Healing to Wellness Court, which operates something like a traditional drug court but offers a cultural curriculum. VICE News followed Stewart on his last day in the Healing to Wellness Court.
We Make Porn to Pay Our Rent
Jessie and PJ Sage are a very busy married couple; they’re both academics, run a podcast together, and she writes a column for the local paper. To make ends meet so they can pursue all of their passions and raise a family, they make their own custom pornography together and sell it to clients or distribute it online. The porn clips they release help them advertise for other elements of their online sex work enterprise that can be more lucrative such as camming and phone sex operating. While the choice of their side hustle hasn’t always been easy for their friends and their extended family to understand, it has allowed them to have a more flexible lifestyle where they have the freedom to choose when they want to churn out sex-work related content. This Hollywood Actor Has a Cult Following For Not Being Famous
Dennis Woodruff may be the most famous non-famous person you’ve never heard of. A fixture of Hollywood for decades, Woodruff has driven around in his eccentric cars, adorned with colorful images and his contact information with the intention of attracting studio executives who might help him land his big break. A trained actor, Woodruff started making his own movies based on a suggestion from Quentin Tarantino to market his abilities. One of NYC's Last Independent Hot Dog Vendors
Danny and Elizabeth Rossi, a father-daughter duo, run a hot dog cart outside New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. As disabled veterans, they are given a special permit for their cart, yet there have been issues with non-vets getting their hands on these permits, allowing illegal businesses to flourish and causing overcrowding. In this video, Danny and Elizabeth share how they manage to survive in this oversaturated and harsh working environment. #streetfoodicons #streetfood #munchies Subscribe to Munchies here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-MUNCHIES All Munchies videos release a full week early on our site: https://video.vice.com/en_us/channel/munchies Hungry? Blockchain Oracles: A Better Oracle Design
Blockchain oracles enable smart contracts to deliver valuable services. The Pyth Network introduces a new design philosophy to the blockchain oracle space. While traditional oracles take for granted the idea that one can incentivize intermediary nodes to collect Web2 data and bring it on-chain through consensus, the Pyth Network recognizes that a world of highly valuable, but guarded financial data exists. Pyth seeks to liberate this data for builders on-chain and off-chain. Financial data from institutional financial players and household names like Jane Street, CBOE, Virtu, Two Sigma, Susquehanna, Binance, OKX, and Wintermute are publishing their proprietary data to Pyth to be aggregated and delivered to more than 20 blockchains in a scalable and cost-effective way.
